Portland Beats Reading in Pitchers Duel

Fightins shut out for first time this season

READING, Pa. (AP) -- Cole Sturgeon had four hits, and Jalen Beeks allowed just three hits over seven innings as the Portland Sea Dogs topped the Reading Fightin Phils 1-0 on Sunday.

Jamie Callahan got Jiandido Tromp to fly out with a runner on second to end the game for his second save of the season.

Beeks (3-1) struck out four and walked three to get the win.

The game's only run was scored in the top of the seventh inning. After reaching base on a walk, Tzu-Wei Lin advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single by Jake DePew.

Joey DeNato (1-1) went one inning, allowing one run and two hits while walking one in the Eastern League game.

The Fightin Phils were blanked for the first time this season, while the Sea Dogs' staff recorded their third shutout of the year.

With the win, Portland improved to 4-2 against Reading this season.
