Here's where the final show is written and produced. The newsroom (only a portion is shown here) is where all of the producers, reporters, anchors, and writers work together to decide the logistical order, timing and content of each newscast.
The assignment editor compiles, documents and decides which stories are newsworthy. He or she is also responsible for setting up interviews and allocating resources to cover the stories - this includes reporters, videographers, news cars and live trucks. Each crew is in radio contact with the Assignment Desk, who can access thousands of electronic maps to help them get to their destinations. Radio scanners are used to track police and fire activity. They also follow up on tips called in by our viewers.
Every desk has a terminal linked to the WinCue computer system. It is here that the reporters investigate and gather information about the stories they report on. The computer system is used to obtain information from the Associated Press, CNN, and other wire services. The reporters have the capability of editing their stories right at their desktops.
The edited stories are stored in our Quantel
computer server for playout during the newscast. The video
segments are "included" in the scripts, so that when the script is read
on the air, the associated video clip is cued and ready to run.
