[ Behind The Scenes Video: Meet The Director ]This is our main studio control room. We call it "Control-A." It was built to specifically handle the growing needs of our news department. It is the nerve center of the entire news broadcast. Here, the broadcasts are controlled by the producer, director, audio operator, and others. The director follows the script which has been prepared for the newscast. He or she gives instructions to the camera operators, tape playback operator, audio, master control, and live remote staff.
While the director sits directly in front of the switcher and monitors,
the producer and executive producer sit further back in the room.
Behind them, in a separate room (with large glass windows), the audio operator controls the levels of the microphones, playback video, and music. Everyone on the studio set wears an ear-piece. The IFB (Interruptable Fold Back) is an ear-piece worn by the anchors that allows the director or producer in the control room to communicate throughout the program. During a live broadcast, anchors may be receiving information in their ear at the same time they are delivering the news. Yes, that takes some practice!
This control room also contains the graphics computers which produce the "over the shoulder" boxes you see over the anchors' shoulders The director uses a still-store machine that acts as a giant electronic photo album, storing hundreds of frames of graphics.
