69News live truck at the Pagoda on Skyline Drive, Mount Penn in Reading, PA |
When it's time to provide live news coverage from outside the station, our live trucks are called into action. We have several of these high-tech trucks, which are based in Allentown, Easton, and Reading. The generator-equipped heavy-duty vans have pneumatic masts that can rise more than 50 feet above the ground. On top of each mast is a microwave transmitter which is used to send the live signal back to the station. In order for the signal to be received by 'home base' (or any of our other relay sites), the microwave signal has to be line of sight (directly in view) with the receiver on the tower. Each truck is equipped with radio gear, plenty of cable, transmitters, and other equipment that might be needed "in the field." The trucks can accommodate a portable laptop digital editor, as well. A reporter can write and edit a story inside these trucks, then send the completed "package" back for the newscast.
