Berks Co - US-222 & Rt 183 Interchange Project
A project to reconstruct the US 222 interchange with PA 183 in Bern Township, Berks County began April 12, 2010.
(update) <br />
Occasional daytime lane restriction with flagging on PA 183 north and south of US 222. Expect delays on PA 183 and PA 183/US 222 ramps. Also the speed limit on US 222 in the construction will be lowered to 45 mph. This is part of the ongoing US 222/PA 183 interchange reconstruction project.

“This project is designed to make the entire interchange more safe and efficient,” District Executive Michael W. Rebert, P.E. said. “When completed, it should reduce backups on PA 183, along with the US 222 off ramps.”
There will be daily lane restrictions on US 222 south from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between PA 61 and Paper Mill Road while crews install concrete barrier. Once the barrier is in place on US 222 south, there will be restrictions on US 222 north to install barrier. Updates will be provided whenever traffic patterns change.
The project includes replacing the PA 183 Bridge over US 222 with a wider and taller structure, interchange ramp improvements, creation of a clover leaf ramp for traffic entering southbound US 222 from northbound PA 183, median shoulder widening on US 222, widening of PA 183, and widening of the PA 183 intersection with Van Reed Road to accommodate turning lanes.
J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. is the general contractor on the $25 million project.
Construction is expected to finish in the spring of 2013.
