Motorists traveling on Main Street in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, will face overnight lane closures Wednesday and Thursday (April 2-3) for the resurfacing of the bridge over Stony Creek.

The resurfacing of Main Street between Water and Pearl streets is the final operation to complete the rehabilitation of the historic stone arch bridge. This bridge rehabilitation project is part of PennDOT’s ongoing $20.8 million project to rebuild and improve Markley Street/U.S. 202 South between Elm Street and Johnson Highway. 

During the milling and paving operation, Main Street will be restricted to a one lane between Markley and Pearl streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., with flaggers directing an alternating lane of eastbound or westbound traffic through the work zone.

In the event rain forces a postponement of the resurfacing work, paving will be rescheduled for the nights of April 4 and April 5.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route or allow additional time for travel on Main Street during resurfacing activities.

PennDOT began construction in April 2013 to preserve the historic stone arch by rehabilitating and strengthening the bridge’s stone arch, rebuilding parapets, constructing new sidewalks and repaving the span.

The Main Street Bridge is owned by Montgomery County and maintained by Norristown Borough.  The bridge, which was built in 1854, is 40 feet long and 83 feet wide.

Operations to repair and establish a new traffic pattern on the Main Street bridge over Stony Creek in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, will restrict travel on the bridge to one lane in each direction Sept. 6-9.

PennDOT’s rehabilitation of the borough’s stone arch bridge is part of the $20.8 million Markley Street improvement project.

From 6 p.m. Friday (Sept.6) to 6 a.m. Monday (Sept.9), Main Street will be reduced to one eastbound lane and one westbound lane between Astor and Markley streets as crews rebuild the pavement on the center section on the bridge. This operation, which is weather dependent, is the second of three stages of construction to rehabilitate and strengthen the structure and reconstruct its pavement and sidewalks.

Following the weekend operation, crews will establish a new traffic pattern on the bridge by 6 a.m. Monday (Sept. 9) that shifts one lane of westbound traffic and two lanes of eastbound traffic to the rebuilt center and north side of the span. Crews will then begin to rebuild the pavement and sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.

Main Street motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel through the work area and to anticipate backups and delays approaching the bridge. Pedestrian access on the bridge is maintained during construction.

Construction on the Main Street bridge is expected to finish in late November.

PennDOT began work in February 2013 to rebuild and improve 1.1 miles of Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway, to improve a half-mile stretch of Johnson Highway between Markley Street and DeKalb Street, and to rehabilitate the Main Street bridge.

Construction on Markley Street is currently taking place on the east side of the street between Elm Street and Harding Boulevard. In addition, utility relocation and installation work continues on Markley Street -- which is limited to one lane southbound between Roberts Street and Harding Boulevard -- from north of Harding Boulevard to Johnson Highway.

This first phase of the Markley Street improvement project is scheduled to finish in fall 2016. J.D. Eckman of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $20,825,701 contract, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

A second project to rebuild Markley Street from Main Street to Elm Street is presently in engineering design, with construction scheduled to start in spring 2015.

PennDOT is improving Markley Street by rebuilding the street to provide one lane in each direction plus a center lane for left turns; adding recessed parking bays in residential areas; installing trees and decorative pedestrian street lights; building an off-street parking lot at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Markley Street; upgrading traffic signals; installing new curb ramps; and adding Intelligent Transportation System components.

As part of the $20.8 million project to rebuild and improve Markley Street/U.S. 202 South in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, a new traffic pattern starts Monday (April 22) on Main Street in the borough for the restoration of the deteriorating stone arch bridge over Stony Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

PennDOT’s contractor will work the next year to preserve the historic, borough-owned Main Street bridge, which was built in 1854, by strengthening the stone arch structure from the inside; installing new parapets atop the structure to match the appearance of the existing walls; replacing sidewalks and approach pavement; and repointing mortar joints.

On Monday (April 22) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., flaggers will direct Main Street traffic through the work zone between Astor and Markley streets while crews establish the new traffic pattern. Once the new pattern is in place, eastbound Main Street will be reduced from three lanes to two on the bridge. Westbound Main Street will remain one lane through the work zone.  This operation is weather dependent.

A sidewalk will remain open on the Main Street bridge on the opposite side of the construction area to provide pedestrian access throughout construction.

The Main Street bridge’s new three-lane traffic pattern will remain in place through April 2014.
