Mahoning Valley Toll Plaza Ramp Closures and Stoppages on US-209 (Aug. 14 and 19) to erect beams on the overhead structure that carries the Turnpike over US-209 and Pohopoco Creek. The work will occur on Thursday, Aug. 14 and Tuesday, Aug. 19 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. with the following restrictions:

Ramp to US-209 northbound:
Aug. 19 - the ramp from the Mahoning Valley Toll Plaza to US-209 northbound will be closed to traffic. The contractor may require additional time to reopen the ramp to set-up and tear-down the crane.

US-209:
Aug. 19 - flagger controlled stoppages in both directions of no more than 15 minutes in advance of the work at the overhead bridge.

Northeastern Extension (I-476) northbound:
Aug. 14 and Aug 19 - a single-lane traffic pattern closing the right lane (A75.5 – A76.5). Also scheduled to occur both nights, between 9:15 p.m. and midnight, are periodic slow-moving traffic paces. State Police will stop traffic south of the Lehigh Tunnel (at milepost A70) and begin pacing traffic northbound to the work zone.

Message boards will be activated at the toll plaza and on US-209 to alert motorists of the closures and stoppages and updated to reflect any changes in the contractor’s schedule. All work is weather permitting and could be delayed or cancelled.

A roadway preservation project on US 209 in Franklin and Towamensing townships, Carbon County, begins August 5, 2014.

The project entails microsurfacing and installing new pavement markings on US 209 between just north of Harrity Road in Franklin Township to just north of Forest Inn Road in Towamensing Township. The contractor plans to micro-surface weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and perform line painting for several hours at night after 7 p.m. (several hours each night). They may work weekends if there is inclement weather during the week. All work on the project is expected to be complete by August 31.

Micro-surfacing involves the application of a thin layer of blacktop mixture to an existing roadway, to provide several years of additional life to the existing pavement. It’s a cost-effective way PennDOT uses to stretch its maintenance resources.
