Work has begun to rehabilitate the structurally deficient PA 183/Schuylkill Avenue Bridge over the Schuylkill River, Norfolk Southern Railroad, and River Road in the City of Reading, Berks County.

The project involves repairing the deck, replacing beams and expansion joints, rehabilitating sidewalk, reconstructing the roadway approaches, drainage improvements and other miscellaneous construction

During construction, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in both directions with reduced traffic lane widths on PA 183 from Blair Avenue to West Windsor Street.

Also, River Road will be closed and detoured. The posted detour utilizes Gordon Street, West Windsor Street, PA 183, Ritter Street, and West Spring Street. Traffic updates will be provided when available.

This bridge project is scheduled to be complete in November. All schedules are subject to change.

Allan A. Myers, LP of Worcester, Pa. is the general contractor on the $7,326,187 project.

The Schuylkill Avenue Bridge is a 26-span, open spandrel concrete arch bridge originally constructed in 1924. It is 670 feet long and 70 feet wide. This section of PA 183 has an average daily traffic volume of 6,348 vehicles.
