Work began Monday, Nov. 4 to rehabilitate the structurally deficient US 209 Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge over the Lehigh River, Lehigh Canal and Norfolk Southern rail line in Franklin Township, Lehighton and Weissport boroughs, Carbon County.

The project involves deck repairs; replacing of deck joints, back-walls, and steel bearings; concrete and steel repairs; removing and replacing one pier, and other miscellaneous construction.

Beginning Nov. 4 and throughout the project, motorists may experience traffic restrictions on Forge, Franklin, Allen, White and Railroad streets in Weissport Borough.

Next summer the southbound lanes of the US 209 Thomas J. McCall Bridge are expected to be closed, with southbound traffic being detoured on Canal and Bridge streets. During this summer detour Bridge Street will be temporarily converted to a one-way road southbound and there will be a temporary traffic signal placed at the intersection of Bridge Street and US 209. Updates will be provided whenever traffic patterns change on area roadways.

This bridge project is scheduled to be complete in May 2015. All schedules are subject to change.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. is the general contractor on the $11,827,600 project.

The 16-span, steel deck truss bridge was originally constructed in 1938 and reconstructed in 1981. It is 1,539 feet long and 42 feet wide. This section of US 209 has an average daily traffic volume of 23,529 vehicles.
