As part of a $20.8 million roadway improvement project, a section of Markley Street in Norristown Borough, Montgomery County, will be closed to northbound traffic for approximately three years beginning Monday, June 17.

PennDOT is currently rebuilding 1.1 miles of Markley Street as part of its two-phase program to improve and beautify the entire length of the street in Norristown.

Beginning June 17, Markley Street will be closed to northbound traffic between Harding Boulevard and Roberts Street, a distance of approximately seven-tenths of a mile.

A posted detour will divert northbound traffic heading toward Markley Street over U.S. Route 202 North/DeKalb Street in Bridgeport and Norristown up to Johnson Highway at the northern end of the borough.

Markley Street will remain open to one lane of southbound travel through the entire work zone, which runs from Johnson Highway to Harding Boulevard.  However, southbound drivers may encounter periodic stoppages on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the remainder of the three-year project.

Markley Street will remain open to northbound and southbound traffic between Main Street and Harding Boulevard at the southern end of the project, and between Roberts Street and Johnson Highway at the northern end.

The Dannehower Bridge, which carries two lanes of northbound and southbound traffic over the Schuylkill River between Norristown and Upper Merion Township, will remain open to motorists traveling to and from Norristown.

SEPTA’s northbound Route 90 bus that normally traverses Markley Street will be detoured over Logan Street and Harding Boulevard beginning in early June.

The Markley Street detour, originally expected to start in late summer, will be put in place approximately two months early to expedite the replacement of water, sewer and gas lines and other subsurface utilities in advance of roadway reconstruction activities.

PennDOT’s contractor is currently rebuilding Markley Street between Elm Street and Harding Boulevard, and rehabilitating the Main Street stone arch bridge over Stony Creek just west of Markley Street. 

Construction began in February 2013 on the $20,825,701 project that includes rebuilding Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway; improving a half-mile stretch of Johnson Highway between Markley Street and DeKalb Street; and rehabilitating the Main Street bridge over Stony Creek. The work is scheduled to finish in fall 2016.

This project is the first of two to improve the Markley Street Corridor in Norristown. A second project to rebuild Markley Street from Main Street to Elm Street is presently in engineering design, with construction scheduled to start in spring 2015.

The Markley Street improvement plan will provide one travel lane in each direction plus a center lane for left turns; recessed parking bays in residential areas; new trees and decorative pedestrian street lights; an off-street parking lot at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Markley Street; and new traffic signals, curb ramps and Intelligent Transportation System components.
