Preliminary work will begin in early October on a $16.8 million project to build two new ramps to improve travel through the U.S. Route 422/Route 363 (Trooper Road) Interchange in West Norriton and Lower Providence townships, Montgomery County.

“The addition of these new ramps will complete the interchange and greatly enhance travel between Routes 422 and 363 (Trooper Road) by providing drivers with access to all moves between the two highways,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said.

PennDOT’s contractor will build an off-ramp from eastbound Route 422 to Route 363 (Trooper Road) and an on-ramp from Route 363 (Trooper Road) to westbound Route 422. Construction is scheduled to finish in fall 2015.

In addition, the improvement plan includes realigning the existing Route 363 (Trooper Road) on-ramp to Route 422 east; building a retaining wall and sound wall along the new eastbound Route 422 off-ramp; repairing the existing Route 422 west off-ramp to Route 363 (Trooper Road); building a retaining wall along the new on-ramp to Route 422 west; widening Route 363 (Trooper Road) through the Audubon Road intersection; widening Audubon Road to include an additional turn and merge lane from Route 363 (Trooper Road); rehabilitating the Route 363 (Trooper Road) bridge over Route 422; building a sidewalk on Route 363 (Trooper Road); and installing new traffic signals and curb ramps.

Two travel lanes in each direction will be maintained on Route 422 during construction, with possible lane closures during off-peak hours. Lane closures will occur on Route 363 (Trooper Road) and the project includes a weekend-long closure of the westbound Route 422 off-ramp to Route 363 (Trooper Road) and a six-day closure of Audubon Road.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $16,857,533 contract, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.

The Route 422/Route 363 (Trooper Road) Interchange was built in the 1970s with two access ramps: an off-ramp from westbound Route 422 to Route 363 (Trooper Road) and an on-ramp to eastbound Route 422 from Route 363 (Trooper Road).

This interchange improvement is one of four projects that are part of the U.S. 422 Schuylkill River Crossing Complex of projects that are designed to enhance travel along Route 422 between the Route 23 and Route 363 (Trooper Road) interchanges.
