What is radar?

A radar is a tool meteorologists use to form pictures of the weather in the atmosphere.

These machines send out waves of energy, called microwaves, that bounce back when they hit certain particles.

Radars use these echoes to determine where the precipitation is, how fast it is moving and how heavy it is falling.

The word RADAR stands for Radio Detection and Ranging.
