ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The former employees of Hess's Department Store are saying goodbye yet again.
Just the mention of Hess's puts a smile on Donald Serfass and Susan Bickta's faces.
"I couldn't believe it. That I actually had that awesome job," Susan said.
To keep those memories alive, former employees of the flagship Hess's would get together every couple of years for a picnic.
"It was great for the camaraderie because everybody was one big family," Donald said. "I got to reconnect with some of my friends from Hess's that I hadn't seen in 35 years."
The last picnic was in August. What they didn't know then, was that it would be the last. As the former employees get older, the amount of work has become too much.
"I think it's just so much work. It gets to be too much after a while," Susan said.
And although some of them can still stay in touch, it makes you wonder if the name Hess's also has an expiration date.
Susan and Donald don't think so.
"This is meant a lot not just for the employees who work there - it meant a lot to everybody," Donald said.
"And I'm hoping as long as coworkers keep talking about it it'll keep the memory alive," Susan said.
