Lehigh Valley appliance business still growing, as many local big-box stores close

EMMAUS, Pa. - As Sears winds down operations at its last remaining store in the Lehigh Valley, a Lehigh County based business is looking to fill the void by doing what it's been doing for more than seven decades.

Kleckner and Sons has been in Doreen Cantalini's family since her great grandfather started it 75 years ago.

"He started out as actually an ice cream parlor, then added groceries, then added appliances," Cantilini said.

75 years, 4 generations, and two stores later, the appliance business is still growing.

"Especially in this area - in the Emmaus area - there's more and more people moving in," Cantilini said.

Which is interesting at a time when the big box stores are going down one by one, the latest being Sears, which is closing its last remaining Lehigh Valley store in Whitehall.

"And you know we have the advantage because we not only sell, we have our own service department, we have our own delivery teams," Cantilini said.

And joining a buying group with other small retailers has allowed them to keep prices competitive.

Doreen says the business wants to keep expanding.

"We wanna grow and we wanna keep on growing and we do have that generation in place," Cantilini said. "It can be stressful at times. We put in a lot of hours, but it's also rewarding."
