FLEETWOOD, Pa. – Firefighters battled flames that tore through several homes in Berks County for hours overnight.

The fire broke out shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Locust Street in Fleetwood.

Flames shot from the roof of at least one home, and smoke poured out of others.

The fire spread to four buildings, including the Fleetwood Seventh-day Adventist Church, and gutted several homes, according to crews at the scene. Firefighters struck three alarms for additional manpower.

A firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury, the fire chief said.

The blaze was marked under control around 3 a.m., and crews cleared the scene shortly before 5 a.m.

A state police fire marshal is working to determine what sparked the fire.
