In the wake of the mysterious deaths of two children found unconscious inside a home in Berks County, welfare officials said the siblings were known to Child and Youth Services.
"That's a really hard thing when two children die at the same time from the same home," said Cathleen Palm, the founder of Berks County-based Center for Children's Justice. "That makes the community want to know more."
Conner Snyder, 8, and his 4-year-old sister, Brinley, were found unconscious inside their home off Route 143 on September 23. The siblings later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown from injuries they suffered, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
As required by law, Palm said her organization is permitted to probe the state for background information.
"The review of these children's deaths outside of the investigative process will be about prevention, looking at systems and saying is there anything that should be done differently," Palm explained.
She said, according to the state Department of Human Services, the siblings were receiving general protective services. Palm said these type of services are made in cases where there is concern about a child's welfare.
Authorities said they are still working to determine how the children died. They are still in the early stages of their investigation.
"As an advocate for children saying we want to know more, but also need to give investigators their space to do what they have to do," Palm said.
