Many happy to see Route 422 ramp reopened ahead of weekend

Route 422 drivers heading into downtown Reading from the city's eastern and southern suburbs got some good news Monday.

The westbound ramp from the West Shore Bypass to the Penn Street Bridge reopened to traffic for the first time in more than two years.

The ramp closed in May 2017 as part of a three-year, $42.5-million project to rehabilitate the Penn Street Bridge between West Reading and center city.

The 27-span concrete arch bridge was constructed in 1913 to carry traffic over the Schuylkill River and Front Street.

The bridge project, which has included concrete repair and superstructure replacement, is expected to be finished later this year.
