Dump truck driver cited in crash that closed I-78 West

A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a dump truck closed a five-mile stretch of Interstate 78 in Berks and Lehigh counties on Tuesday.

The crash was reported around 9 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-78 at milepost 41.1 in Greenwich Township, Berks County.

The westbound dump truck was attempting to pass the tractor-trailer when the truck drifted into the right lane and sideswiped the tractor-trailer, police said.

The impact caused the tractor-trailer to jump onto and ride a concrete barrier for a period of time before coming to rest, police said.

No one was injured.

The crash happened in a construction zone where neither trucks nor buses are permitted to travel in the left lane, so the dump truck driver will be cited, police said.

I-78 West was closed between the Kutztown/Krumsville interchange (Exit 40) in Berks County and the New Smithville interchange (Exit 45) in Lehigh County while crews worked to remove the damaged trucks and clean up diesel fuel that spilled from the tractor-trailer.
