TOPTON, Pa. - The Fleetwood Police Department has been given the green light to protect and serve the nearby borough of Topton on a part-time basis.
The Topton Borough Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to contract with Fleetwood police to patrol Topton, effective Jan. 1.
Fleetwood police officers will provide 40 hours a week of "roving coverage." State police will cover Topton the rest of the time.
Fleetwood police will hire an additional full-time officer to help cover Topton, which was part of the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department up until the end of 2012, when the force was disbanded.
Fleetwood police also patrol Richmond Township. Coverage of Ruscombmanor Township could begin in the spring, according to the department's chief.
