MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - The coronavirus pandemic has claimed yet another event that has become a popular summertime tradition in Berks County.
The Muhlenberg Township Parks and Recreation Department announced Tuesday that it has canceled its 2020 edition of RiverFest, which was set to run Aug. 28-30 at Jim Dietrich Park.
Organizers said the decision was made after careful consultation between the township's board of commissioners and the RiverFest event committee as a way of helping to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Now, they will turn their attention toward making next year's festival bigger and better.
"Muhlenberg Township will continue to push the creative envelope to help grow RiverFest each year and 2021 will be no exception," the department said in a statement.
Earlier in the day Tuesday, organizers of the annual Lyons Fiddle Festival announced that event's cancellation. Other events that have been postponed or canceled include the Oley Valley Community Fair, the Governor Mifflin Community Days, World War II Weekend, and Reading's Bandshell Concert Series.
