Police in New Jersey said a man from the Reading area drowned in the Atlantic Ocean while trying to save his son.
First responders in Atlantic City responded to the beach at New Jersey Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. Monday. They said a 58-year-old man tried to rescue his 11-year-old son, who was drowning.
A former police officer who saw what happened tried to pull the man to shore.
A Berks County woman vacationing at the beach witnessed the attempted rescue.
"We saw a gentleman going out with a yellow board trying to get to the person, and at that moment, more people trying to get into the water to help," said Mary Pahl of Shillington.
Emergency personnel were able to get the man out of the water. He later died at the hospital.
Police said his son somehow made it back to land on his own.
