HAMBURG, Pa. - Hamburg-bound motorists, beware! Heavier-than-usual traffic on Interstate 78 is expected this weekend, and that may prompt borough police to close the highway's eastbound off-ramp at Exit 30.

Police said the additional traffic will be the result of PennDOT moving the site of ongoing construction work to between the Route 737 (Exit 40) interchange in Berks County and the Route 863 (Exit 45) interchange in Lehigh County.

As a result, police said they expect an increase of traffic, including commercial vehicles, in the borough, as I-78 East motorists seek to avoid the construction backlog.

"So the best piece of advice I can give is to drive slow and pay attention to what's going on outside of your car," said Chief Anthony Kuklinski, Hamburg Police Department.

While the need to close the highway exit remains to be seen, Hamburg police said they are already prohibiting parking in several spaces at Fourth and State streets.
