Police: Woman stole from club to support gambling habit

Criminal charges have been filed against a Berks County woman who admitted to stealing thousands of dollars from a social club to support an uncontrollable gambling habit.

Yvonne Lis was arraigned Thursday morning on charges of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

Lis was the only person responsible for depositing money in the bank accounts of the Stonersville Social Club in Exeter Township, police said.

When club leaders discovered that money was missing, they conducted an audit, which revealed that $54,619.86 had been taken from the club in 2016 and 2017, according to court documents.

Lis, 62, of Fleetwood, subsequently admitted to the club in a letter that she's a "pathological gambler" and took the money to feed her addiction, according to the court paperwork. She also promised to reimburse the club for what she took.

Lis was freed Thursday on $30,000 unsecured bail. She's due back in court for a preliminary hearing on June 20.
