Sinkhole exposes Mariner east pipeline in Chester County

Another sinkhole has opened up in Chester County, exposing the Mariner East 1 pipeline. It happened over the weekend in West Whiteland Township.

Sunoco said the pipeline isn't damaged, but will shut it down temporarily as a precaution.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission said in a release as a result of the shutdown no product is currently flowing through an approximately 7-mile section of the pipeline. The pipeline is shut down between the valves at Boot and Exton.

The PUC said its Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement has the authority to bring enforcement action, seek emergency orders from the commission or take other steps to ensure public safety, should circumstances change or based on the finding of the investigation.

This is the same area where sinkholes opened up last year, forcing Sunoco to stop construction of its Mariner East Two pipeline, which also runs through Berks County.
