A sinkhole-plagued stretch of Route 422 between Reading and Hershey will remain closed for a longer period of time than originally expected.
PennDOT said work to fill a void beneath the highway in North Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, near Palmyra, will continue until late November.
PennDOT had originally hoped to reopen Route 422 before the start of the school year. The road has been closed between Plaza Drive and Apple Blossom Road since May.
The work includes covering the road with a concrete slab, but the contractor must first install 84 steel support columns, referred to micropiles, which will be embedded into the rock bed below the road surface.
Site excavation is scheduled to begin Monday, weather permitting, with the micropile work starting August 5.
The official detour involves Routes 117, 322, and 934.
A growing sinkhole forced the same stretch of Route 422 to be closed for several weeks in 2017.
