PERRY TWP., Pa. - A Berks County woman lost her life a crash that closed a stretch of Route 61 between Shoemakersville and Hamburg for more than three hours Tuesday morning.

Brenda Waits was traveling south on Route 61 near Logistics Drive shortly before 7:30 a.m., when she lost control of her SUV around a curve on the wet highway and struck an oncoming pickup truck, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Waits' car was then hit by a northbound car that couldn't avoid impact, police said.

Waits, 46, of Shoemakersville, died at the scene, police said; the other two drivers were transported to Reading Hospital, but their injuries were not reported to be life-threatening.

The northbound lanes of Route 61 were closed between Bellevue Avenue and Zion Church Road until 10:30 a.m.

One lane of Route 61 South was also closed, and heavy traffic delays were reported.
