Worker killed on the job in Reading; OSHA investigating

A man lost his life in an industrial accident in Reading late Thursday morning.

Paramedics and firefighters were dispatched shortly after 10 a.m. to The Rose Corporation in the 400 block of North Eighth Street.

The initial report from the scene was for an employee who was trapped inside a machine, but by the time help came, it was too late.

"Once we make the determination whether we're in a rescue or recovery mode, we shift gears and go from there," said Dep. Chief Michael Glore, Reading Fire Department.

The Berks County coroner identified the victim as Wilfred Santiago, 75, of West Reading.

Company representatives said Santiago retired, but ended up returning to work.

"Tragically an employee passed away today at The Rose Corporation," the company said in a statement. "We are fully supporting the local police and investigators to determine the cause of the accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our coworker's family and loved ones during this time of loss."

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

OSHA -- the Occupational Safety and Health Administration -- dispatched its investigators to the scene.
