EASTON, Pa. - Two suspects accused of brutally attacking a woman with a bat in Easton appeared in court Friday.
The two learned they're going to trial and with more serious charges.
18-year-old Junito Velez and 17-year-old Jorge Velasquez, are facing the charges two months after allegedly beating a woman with a bat in the College Hill neighborhood. The two are now charged with felony aggravated assault, robbery and conspiracy.
Police say the woman was attacked on Porter Street on December 11. She allegedly told police she heard footsteps behind her before being hit in the head and knocked to the ground.
Officials say the assault broke her rib and nose, and resulted in severe cuts to her head.
Velasquez and Velez were arrested days later. Officials say the two were looking for someone to rob, but didn't target this woman. They say she and her family are still in shock.
"Obviously they're shaken as anyone would be in this situation, just a random act of violence," said Northampton County Assistant District Attorney Alec Colquhoun.
Colquhoun says what's so scary for many families, is that this happened in a normally very quiet neighborhood.
"It goes to show that crime can literally happen to anyone at anytime anywhere," Colquhoun said.
The men are due back in court in late May.
