Family of local Olympian holds opening ceremony watch party

Friends and family of Joe Kovacs of nazareth gathered to watch the opening ceremonies for the Rio Olympics Friday.

TOKYO - Lehigh Valley native Joe Kovacs has captured the second Olympic medal of his career, earning silver once again in the shot put competition. 

The former Bethlehem Catholic and Penn State standout was part of a one-two finish atop the medal stand for the Americans. Fellow thrower, Ryan Crouser earned gold setting a new world record in the process. 

Kovacs is a two-time world champion, and now a two-time Olympic silver medalist with consecutive second place finishes.
