It's the first day for mail-in ballot boxes in Northampton County this election cycle.

"We have seven, and we're looking forward to encouraging folks who can get to the drop boxes to get to the drop boxes," said Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure.

McClure says the county's mail-in ballots started going out this week.

In Lehigh County, boxes and the ballots will go out next week. When we stopped by the voter registration office, Chief Clerk Tim Benyo gave us the grand tour, including a look at new machines to speed up the mail-in ballot count process.

But what if voters accidentally fill out their ballot incorrectly?

"In 2022, there were 10,000 ballots that were discarded because the voter forgot to handwrite the date, or the date was deemed incorrect," said Marian Schneider, with the ACLU.

She says since 2022, counties have been allowed to notify voters when they make a mistake on a mail-in ballot and correct it or cast a provisional ballot.

According to an ACLU analysis, only 16 Pennsylvania counties have opted out.

Looking at its map, the only county in our area that doesn't do it is Schuylkill.

Even so, election officials say it's important for voters to read their ballot closely and follow illustrated directions.

"So English and Spanish, one side or the other pictures explaining how to fill out about what's required and how to return it," said Benyo.

Voters can drop their ballot in the mail early or return it themselves before the polls close at 8 p.m. on election day.
