BETHLEHEM, Pa. - We're just days away from celebrating America's birthday, and local leaders want to make sure no one gets hurt, or even worse, killed.

The Lehigh Valley DUI and Highway Safety Task Force gathered with the Bethlehem police and fire officials Tuesday to remind drivers to be sober behind the wheel while traveling to and from Independence Day festivities.

They also offered tips on how to safely grill on the barbecue, like keeping hair tied back, and warned what not do while setting off legal fireworks.

"So somebody lights a firework in their hand. They try to throw it, and the fuse burns quickly and it blows up in their hand. Or, it's a slow burning fuse, so they toss the firework and it doesn't blow up yet, so they walk up to it and now it blows up as they're hovering over it in their face," said Cpt. Kevin Landis with the Bethlehem Fire Department.

During Tuesday's event law enforcement officers were also honored for going above and beyond to ensure everyone's safety.
