A serious crash has shut down a portion of Interstate 78 in Northampton County.
I-78 is completely closed in both directions near mile marker 68.5, between Hellertown (Exit 67) and Route 33 (Exit 71). State police say one lane of traffic was squeezing by on the westbound side, as of 6 a.m.
Several tractor-trailers and at least one car were involved in the crash during pouring rain overnight.
The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. Friday, but is causing headaches for the morning commute.
A driver stuck on I-78 told 69 News at least three or four tractor-trailers appeared to be involved in the crash, as well as at least one car, on the eastbound side.
Several of the trucks were flipped over, one appeared to crush a car and pieces of the axles were scattered on the highway, he said.
On the westbound side, at least one tractor-trailer flipped.
"We were hydroplaning all over the place and I was doing about 40-45 (mph), but we were hydroplaning like mad. It was torrential downpouring right before this happened," said the driver, Thomas Mau.
69 News has crews at the scene and will have live updates all morning on 69 News at Sunrise.
