TOBYHANNA TWP., Pa. - A theft investigation in New Jersey led to a police chase and crash in Monroe County.
Pocono Mountain Regional police were assisting detectives from Atlantic City, New Jersey in a felony theft investigation, according to a news release.
Police saw one of the suspects leaving a home in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County Saturday evening, police said.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it took off at a high rate of speed, headed north on Interstate 380.
The vehicle exited onto Route 435 in Wayne County and crashed. Police took the passenger into custody, but the driver fled into the woods, said Pocono Mountain Regional police.
Investigators searched the vehicle, two other vehicles and a home in Tobyhanna Township. They recovered more than $100,000 in cash, as well as drug paraphernalia and a "large amount of merchandise consistent with the proceeds of theft," police said.
Kevin Taylor, 22, is facing charges in both Monroe County and Atlantic City. An arrest warrant has been issued for the driver, Khalif Pinnix, 44. Both men are from Newark.
Pocono Mountain Regional police said additional charges are expected against a third person for possession of a stolen handgun and concealed weapon.
