FRANKLIN TWP., Pa. | Emergency crews rescued a motorist Sunday evening after his vehicle drove off the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension in Carbon County.

Authorities report that a southbound vehicle plummeted more than 100 feet down an embankment off the turnpike in Franklin Township about 5 p.m. Crews used ropes and basket to retrieve the victim, who was taken to a hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately clear why the vehicle drove off the highway.
