POTTSVILLE, Pa. - A Pottsville woman is sentenced for her role in a scheme to swindle grandparents.

33-year-old Yahaira Diaz was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $165,000 in restitution.

Here's how the scam worked:

An individual would call an elderly person pretending to be their grandchild who was in a vehicle accident and arrested.

They would say the grandchild needed bail money or legal representation and persuade the victim to send them thousands of dollars in cash.

Authorities say Diaz played a central role in the scam based in Allentown and Bethlehem.

Authorities said Diaz and others defrauded at least 10 elderly victims of at least $158,800 and tried to defraud the victims of at least an additional $69,000.
