Authorities are warning residents in Monroe County of a phone scam involving an automated message claiming to be the state police.
People in the county have reported receiving phone calls with an automated message saying it was the Pennsylvania State Police and that their Social Security number was compromised.
The phone number was associated with the calls is 570-839-7701, which is the old phone number to the Swiftwater barracks but is no longer associated with the state police.
State police said in a news release it never asks for sensitive information over the phone.
Anyone who feels they have been a victim of the scam is encouraged to file a report with their local police department.
