Merck sales up, GAAP net income down in second quarter

Pharmaceutical giant Merck announced it will be laying off about 500 employees at its Upper Gwynedd and Lansdale offices in Montgomery County.

In a letter Wednesday from the Vice President of State Government Affairs and Policy, it says the first wave of layoffs will begin on January 3 and the remainder will get pink slips between the 3rd and 16th. It says it will affect field-based and office-based sales personnel in the company's Human Health Division.

The affected field-based personnel work out of their homes in various states, including Pennsylvania.

The layoffs are expected to be permanent.
