WARMINSTER TWP., Pa. - It's meant to filter your car's exhaust, but crooks are using it to line their pockets with cash. Thefts of catalytic converters are on the rise and it's a costly repair for car owners.

Warminster Township police are looking for two men accused of stealing catalytic converters. The crime in Bucks county took place at various shopping centers.

Mechanics say it's common especially around the holiday shopping season.

Mechanics say it's a quick crime without a lot of noise. The catalytic converter is in three parts and the thieves are targeting the middle section of the vehicle.

There are three metals including platinum in the parts, and when those prices rise, so do the thefts.

Replacing a catalytic converter can be very expensive. That's because they have to replace the whole system from the front to the back of the car. There is no real way to protect yourself other than park in a garage or well lit area.

If you have any information on the crimes, call the police.
