Police ID Berks man who died trying to save son from ocean

Victim is Thanh Bui, 58, of Reading

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Police have released the name of the Berks County man who died while trying to rescue his son from the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey.

The victim was identified Tuesday as Thanh Bui, 58, of Reading.

Emergency responders responded around 9:30 a.m. Monday to the report of a child drowning off the beach at New Jersey Avenue in Atlantic City.

Before they arrived, Bui had entered the water to help his 11-year-old son, who eventually made it to shore.

Bui, however, began struggling, and a former police officer who happened to be at the beach entered the water and tried to pull him in using a boogie board.

Emergency responders soon brought the two men ashore, but Bui was unresponsive. He later died at a hospital.

The former police officer, Jim Glorioso Jr. of Amsterdam, New York, wasn't injured.

The child was treated at the hospital for undisclosed injuries.

The incident happened about a half-hour before Atlantic City's lifeguards were set to go on duty.
