Reading man killed in crash helping to raise 5 children

'The hardest part was telling my kids'

READING, Pa. - A father of three was killed in a single-car wreck in southwest Reading early Monday morning. Now, his longtime girlfriend's grieving voice comes into focus.

"The hardest part was telling my kids that their dad wasn't coming back," said Migdalia Sanchez.

Carlos Nieves, 29, was her boyfriend of 10 years. The two had three children together, and he was helping to raise two of her own children.

Police said Nieves was driving by himself shortly after 1 a.m., when he lost control of his car in the 400 block of Lancaster Avenue.

"It appears that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Lancaster Avenue, lost control as they were navigating the turn, and then crashed into a retaining wall in front of a residence," said Lt. Cheryl Gelsinger, Reading Police Department.

The crash left broken glass and shattered car parts spread onto nearby lawns.

Sanchez said he was working at Deka and was well-known and well-liked. She started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his funeral.

"Now, I'm a single mother of five and I don't have the money to bury him," said Sanchez. "I wish I would just walk through the door and this was all a dream."
