Reading police warn city residents about telephone scam

READING, Pa. - Reading police issued a warning Thursday about a telephone scam.

The department said it has received multiple reports about a caller pretending to represent the police and saying that the receiver's Social Security number has been compromised. The caller may then ask for personal information.

Reading police said it's a scam and that RPD officers will never contact you for such personal information.

"If you believe the caller is indeed from the Reading Police Department, you may call us directly at 610-655-6116 and verify the legitimacy of the call," the department said in a post on its Facebook page.
