Recycling company announces plans for plant in Muhlenberg

'It's something we've worked very hard on'

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - A West Coast recycling company is headed east, announcing plans to build a plant in the greater Reading area.

"This is a great thing for Muhlenberg," said Michael Malinowski, president of the Muhlenberg Township commissioners.

CarbonLITE, a Los Angeles-based recycling company, will open a new facility on Route 61 in Muhlenberg Township.

"It's going to make the property across from Bob Fisher just a beautiful site," Malinowski said.

CarbonLITE said its plan is to build a 270,000-square-foot plant from the ground up, a total investment of more than $80 million.

"Good-paying jobs, secure jobs, you know, construction jobs," Malinowski said. "I mean, it's a huge facility that they're building, so we're extremely happy about the type of work and the type of economic development and tax base it'll grow for Muhlenberg."

Malinowski said CarbonLITE's decision to expand in Muhlenberg means more than 100 new manufacturing jobs for the county.

"We're so excited," he said. "It's something we've worked very hard on, to make our community business-friendly, to attract folks like this in."

CarbonLITE specializes in processing used plastic bottles that can then be used to manufacture new plastic beverage bottles, among other products. There's no exact timeline on when construction will begin, but the company said it expects to be in full operation by early 2020.
