A Lower Macungie Township woman is facing charges after authorities say she struck a man with her car in South Whitehall Township and left the scene.
Sahar Atiyeh, 52, was charged Tuesday with homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death, and related offenses in the deadly October crash, according to court paperwork.
South Whitehall Township police were called to the 1700 block of Mauch Chunk Road in October 2018 for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, the DA's office said. The vehicle was no longer at the scene.
The man, identified as Scott White of Towamensing Township, was unresponsive and severely injured.
White, 37, died at the scene from his injuries, authorities said. His cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.
Atiyeh voluntarily came to the South Whitehall Township Police Department the next day with her attorney and turned herself in, police said.
She told police she was driving home after a 27-hour travel day from Syria when she hit something, but didn't know what, according to court paperwork. She continued driving home and consulted family members about what to do.
Police allege Atiyeh knew she hit a person but did not stop or contact police. Investigators said a visibility study shows she should have been able to see White on the side of the road and been able to stop in time to avoid hitting him, police said.
Atiyeh was alleged to be "grossly negligent and reckless in striking and causing the death of Mr. White," the district attorney's office said in a news release.
