Laughter can truly be the best form of medicine when it comes to keeping spirits high while in recovery.
Cheesy "dad jokes" might not be for everyone, but for Neiva Fett, of Madison, Wisconsin, they kept her going as she recovered from back surgery.
She credits her neighbors, Tom and Jennifer Hanser, with keeping her positive while she regained her strength.
Neiva's doctor advised her to walk every day to help with her recovery.
Things started off slow for her, but as she began to explore her neighborhood, she found a reason to keep coming back out.
It was Jennifer Hanser's idea to start posting daily dad jokes on a sign outside their home at the beginning of the pandemic.
Neiva says even when walking seemed like a daunting task, she always looked forward to reading the joke.
"When it was really cold, I'd put on boots and caps and jacket, and I didn't feel like. But I thought, 'If I don't go, I'll miss the joke of the day!'" she said.
The Hansers say they're glad that such a small gesture on their part could bring so much joy to their community.
Neiva hasn't missed a day of walking since she started in January.
Here are a few of the Hansers' "dad jokes" that kept Neiva smiling:
"It's my wife's birthday tomorrow, and she's been leaving jewelry catalogs everywhere, so I bought her a magazine rack."
"I canceled my subscription to the Scrabble club. Now they're sending me threatening letters."
"I ate a kid's meal at McDonald's today. His mom got really mad."
