Jerry Jalbert used to be a tax consultant and the Mayor of South Portland in 2014. Now, he's behind the wheel of a school bus.

Jalbert does field trips, sports games and has learned all the routes.

He said when he first made the decision, his friends raised concerns  saying he would have to be on a bus with 50 screaming kids.

Jalbert said it's not like that though.

He compares his relationship with the kids to that of a teacher and their students.

"Except bus drivers have one huge advantage over teachers. We as bus drivers don't assign homework," Jalbert said.

To help hire more drivers in a quicker time, the U.S. Department of Education currently gives states the option of waiving the portion of the CDL skills test, which requires applicants to identify what's under the hood.

American Rescue Plan funds can be used to hire staff, but those waivers expire at the end of March.
