As many malls struggle, Palmer Park Mall doing just fine

PALMER TWP., Pa. - At a time when many malls are struggling, the Palmer Park Mall in Palmer Township is doing just fine. What's the secret of their success?

Although malls are in a state of decline nationally, you wouldn't know that walking around the Palmer Park Mall.

"We're just far enough away from everybody that we're really not competing with anybody," said Jack Mitchell, the mall's general manager.

"Most malls of this vintage have kind of a darker look to them," Mitchell said.

But the future is bright, even though Palmer Park lost their Bon-Ton.

"Normally when you lose an anchor, the real estate folks smell blood," Mitchell said.

Sales for the retailers in the mall jumped double digits following the loss of the Bon-Ton, which seems counter-intuitive.

However, Mitchell says the loss of Bon-Ton and Sears are driving people to Boscov's.

"Since we're attached to Boscov's we're the beneficiaries of their good fortune," Mitchell said.

This Boscov's performs better than nearby Boscov's, and the mall's compact size is an advantage.

"They park, they can easily get a space, they walk in, they go to right to their store, they can easily get what they need," Mitchell said.

Mitchell is hoping a redevelopment of the Bon-Ton keeps that momentum going.
