Police say DUI suspect drove into apartment building

New Jersey man appeared 'out of it,' police said

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Authorities said an New Jersey man accused of DUI appeared to be “out of it” after he drove his truck into an apartment building.

Allentown police were dispatched to 2631 30th Street Southwest just after 7 p.m. May 8 to investigate a report of a wreck. An officer said he arrived to find Shakir W. Tyler, of Plainfield Township, standing next to his pickup truck. The pickup was off the road and against a building in the Whitestone Village apartment complex, according to court records.

The officer said Tyler was staggering and unable to stand on his own, according to records. He allegedly told police with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes that he didn’t know where he was or what was going on. It’s not clear from court papers why Tyler was in the Allentown area or whether the building sustained any damage.

Tyler was taken to the DUI center, where he allegedly refused testing. Police said a records search showed that his license was suspended due to DUI-related charges.

Police charged the 40-year-old with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence and a summary count of driving with a suspended license.

District Judge Rod Beck arraigned Tyler, setting bail at $5,000. He was released from Lehigh County Mail on May 10 after a bondsman posted bail. His next court date is a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 20.
