Woman dead, man missing and boy in hospital after Luzerne County house explosion

DORRANCE TWP., Pa. - A woman is dead and her husband is missing after a house exploded in Dorrance Township, Luzerne County overnight.

The couple's son is in the hospital as crews search the rubble for answers.

"It was just this absolutely horrific bomb explosion," neighbor Linda Cuono said.

She says it was so powerful it shook her house, and she could feel it in her bones. She says her family ran to the window of their Dorrance Township, Luzerne County home.

Debris covered the lawn and the neighbor's house.

"It was just gone," Cuono said.

Cuono says her family started hearing a series of explosions and a fire erupted where the house once was.

"We heard somebody screaming from the house and I didn't know what to do," she said.

Cuono says there was nothing to do. The fire was out of control and spreading quickly.

"One individual made it out and we have one confirmed deceased individual we're still searching," State Trooper Anthony Petroski said.

Hours after the explosion, fire crews monitored hot spots while an excavator searched through the rubble.

The blast was so intense it knocked nails through the drywall in Cuono's ceiling, cracked her front door shut and ripped off her outside screens.

She says insurance will cover the damage. She's more concerned about her neighbors.

"They were very nice they are known everybody knows them from around here," she said.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
