POTTSVILLE, Pa. | Officials are investigating a fire that broke out Tuesday night in the 600 block of Pierce Street in Pottsville, Schuylkill County.

Pottsville Fire Chief Jim Misstishin says the fire affected three residential units, leaving nine people without a home. Two residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but later released.

There was extensive fire damage to the roof and third floor of one of the units, with water and smoke damage affecting the rest of the structure.

The other two units suffered roof damage as well as some smoke and water damage.

Chief Misstishin says one firefighter sustained an ankle injury.

The Red Cross is assisting the families in need, and the chief says their functioning smoke alarms played a large part helping with the evacuation of residents.

Firefighters and police are continuing their investigation Thursday.
