Will Smith film departs Georgia over voting restrictions

Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua have pulled production of their runaway slave drama “Emancipation” from Georgia over the state’s recently enacted law restricting voting access. The film is the largest and most high profile Hollywood production to depart the state since Georgia’s Republican-controlled state Legislature passed a law that introduced stiffer voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limited drop boxes and gave the State Election Board new powers to intervene in county election offices and to remove and replace local election officials. Opponents have said the law is designed to reduce the impact of minority voters.

Off-duty Italy art cops find looted statue in Belgian shop

Italian police say they have recovered a 1st century Roman statue that was stolen from an archaeological site in 2011 and found in a Belgian antiques shop by two off-duty Italian art squad police officers. The Carabinieri art squad said Monday that an Italian businessman who used a Spanish pseudonym has been referred to prosecutors for further investigation into allegations he received and then exported the statue abroad. The statue, featuring a headless Roman wearing a draped toga, has been valued at 100,000 euro. It was stolen in November 2011 from the Villa Marini Dettina archaeological site on the outskirts of Rome. The two art squad police were on assignment in Brussels when they took a walk after work in an area known for its antiques shops.

The Met Gala is coming back. Not only once, but twice. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that the annual high-wattage celebration of both fashion and celebrity -- canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic -- will return in person. The first will be a more intimate affair in September. And then the larger gala will return in 2022 on its usual date on the first Monday in May. There was no word yet on the celebrity hosts, or chairs. The galas will launch a two-part exhibition. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” opens Sept. 18. Part Two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” opens May 5, 2022.
